Eventing Dressage Test – Part 1

The rider/horse combinations are nominated by the nations.
The rider/horse combinations must qualify according to specific FEI criteria.
Each nation may enter up to five rider/horse combinations in Eventing.
A team consists of three to four riders, each with one horse. The fifth rider competes as an individual.
A nation that is unable to send a team may enter a maximum of two individual riders, each with one horse.

Dressage Test

As the first phase of the competition, each rider completes the Dressage test (Dressage Test: Olympic Short Test).
From the scores of the three judges, an average score is calculated and displayed to the audience as a percentage out of 100, reflecting the quality of the performance. In addition—unlike in the specialist discipline of Dressage—this result is then converted into penalty points, which are later added to the penalty points from the Show Jumping and Cross-Country phases for the overall classification.
The penalty score is calculated as follows: 100 − percentage score.

In Eventing every rider/horse combination has to compete in these three disciplines: Dressage, Cross-Country and Show Jumping.

The course length is between 5,600 and 5,800 metres.
The speed is 570 metres per minute.
A total of 38 to 42 obstacles must be jumped.
The riders start in the same order as in the Dressage Test.
The start and finish are both located on the Cross-Country Course Soers.

Jumping Test (Medal decision)

As the final test of the competition, the rider/horse combinations complete the Show Jumping course in the Main Stadium.
The course length is a maximum of 600 metres.
The speed is set at 375 metres per minute.
A total of 11 to 13 obstacles must be jumped.
The riders start in reverse order of the individual results after the Dressage and Cross-Country Test.
