Vaulters in action: Special acrobatic displays in Aachen city centre ahead of the World Championships

A woman dressed in sportswear is performing a one-legged handstand on the edge of a historic fountain in a square in the old town; the richly decorated façade of a Gothic town hall and other old houses can be seen in the background.

In the run-up to the FEI World Championships, the defending champions in vaulting have already been familiarising themselves with Aachen. Between the cathedral, the town hall and the Tivoli, Team NORKA from the Voltigierverein Köln-Dünnwald has already impressively demonstrated what spectators at the Allianz Park can look forward to next week.

In their light blue freestyle outfits, the six vaulters from the highly decorated German club caused quite a stir. Handstands, jumps, lifts – their acrobatic repertoire gave a glimpse of the athletic feats the three-time World and European champions will perform once they are on horseback. Iconic Aachen landmarks provided an equally stunning backdrop: in front of the cathedral and town hall, at the Super C and Elisenbrunnen, and in the Tivoli right next to Allianz Park – everywhere the vaulters provided the perfect motif for the photographer and numerous passers-by.

From Thursday 13 August, things will get serious for the defending champions. In the purpose-built roofed Stadium 3 at the Allianz Park, thousands of spectators will watch the world’s best compete. “The mood and atmosphere will be unique. We’re already getting goosebumps just thinking about it,” says Gianna Ronca, speaking on behalf of her entire Team NORKA.
