The “Spielende Pferde” (“Playing Horses”) are the iconic landmark of the Aachen showgrounds. The bronze sculpture by the Aachen-based sculptor Wolfgang Binding was erected around twenty years ago before the FEI World Equestrian Games 2006 and has shaped the image of the venue ever since. Positioned prominently at the heart of the showgrounds, it has become a fixed point of reference for generations of riders and visitors alike.

The sculpture shows two horses in a moment of uninhibited encounter – curious, relaxed, and playfully interacting. This image of a free, respectful and harmonious relationship with the horse is deeply rooted in Aachen’s equestrian tradition. The “Spielende Pferde” thus symbolise partnership, trust, and the joy of the sport, all of which are at the core of what Aachen stands for.

Today, twenty years after the FEI World Equestrian Games 2006, the “Spielende Pferde” feature as an established emblem on many prize-giving materials – including rugs, ribbons and sashes. For athletes as well as visitors, they are the instantly recognisable hallmark of Aachen and an expression of the special connection between the city, the showgrounds and equestrian sport. At the same time, they are a beautiful reminder of the FEI World Championships Aachen 2026 – an event that many will look back on with great fondness.
